Castlewood is best known for its incredible golf course setting and stunning views of the valley and the Pleasanton ridge. The clubhouse was originally the estate of Phoebe Apperson Hearst of the famous Hearst family, although it burned down 1969 and subsequently rebuilt. Many of the early homes in Castlewood were actually summer homes of the San Francisco and Oakland elite. It has a fascinating history, and was the precursor to the famous Hearst Castle at San Simeon.
